It’s the right question with a twist most sizing guides miss: for hand-held event signs, you don’t spec the size the way you’d spec a banner by the foot. This is mobile signage: the frame comes in fixed, engineered sizes, not cut-to-order. The variable that actually decides whether a sign gets seen at an event is height and illumination, not square footage. So the real sizing question splits in two: which format fits my message, and will it read at distance in a crowd.
A hand-held sign isn’t measured like a banner: nobody bolts it to a wall, a person carries it.
Fixed signage gets sized to fill a space. Mobile signage gets sized to win a sightline. The face travels with a runner through a concourse, lifts above heads at a busy gate, and turns toward wherever the crowd is. So the two numbers that decide whether it works aren’t width and height on a wall. They’re how high the holder can raise it and how far the message reads once it’s up. Two things to read off that table. First, circle vs. rectangle is a message decision, not a size decision: pick the circle for a logo or a short directional word, the rectangle when you need a wider lockup or two lines. Second, read the max-height column for what it actually is: the assembled sign on a fully extended hand-held monopole (60″), measured from the bottom of the pole. Roughly six feet, the circles just over, the rectangle just under. That’s the length of the unit, not a ceiling. Whoever’s holding it sets the real height, and at a busy gate they hold it up. The number is useful because it tells you how much pole you’re working with, not because six feet is where the sign ends up.
A sign sized for a desk is useless across a plaza. This is where illumination does the work a bigger sign would otherwise have to: the LED panel is 4,500 lumens with zero fall-off, readable at 50 feet, and further after dark. A lit 12″ face beats a dim 24″ one at event distances. So the practical answer to “how big should it be” is: this size, lit. Not bigger.
The standard signage convention is one inch of letter height per ten feet of viewing distance. An industry rule of thumb. On a fixed 12.36″ face that math is unforgiving: a 3″ cap height reads at roughly thirty feet, and two or three lines of it is all the room there is.
That constraint is the answer, not a limitation to work around. Don’t size the text to fill the face. Size the message to fit the text. Three to five words, one idea, bold sans-serif, high contrast. A gate number. A sponsor lockup. A single directional word. The frames were built around that discipline rather than in spite of it, which is why a 12″ lollipop out-reads a crowded 24″ board at the same distance.
Illumination buys back the rest. A backlit 3″ letter at 4,500 lumens still reads at dusk and under floodlights, where the same letter printed on board has already gone flat.

The safe area is the viewable area minus 0.25″ on every side (0.5″ off each dimension): 11.86″ diameter on the Famous 14″ Circle, 11.80″ × 8.40″ on the Rectangle, and 11.88″ diameter on the Quick-Snap Circle.
